Description of Services:
Judy Donovan Whitty, R.N. (Ret’d), BA, B.Ed., M.Ed., C.C.C. has been a Certified Canadian Counsellor through CCPA and Glasser Canada beginning in NS since 1994. A member of PEI CA since 2000 and sits on the PEI CA Executive. Judy’s Counselling Service is part time in Charlottetown, PE.
It was my privilege to serve on the NS Counselling Association until moving to PEI in 2000 as Director of Instruction, Special Education and Assistant to the Superintendent of the Western School Board, and joined PEICA. I am pleased that the Association in each province achieved Legislation that protects the public and the counsellor.
Music Care Canada training by Princess Margaret staff has been a component of my work over the years in addition to offering/teaching a complementary modality Therapeutic Touch®️ developed in 1972 by Dr. Dolores Krieger and Dora Kunz. These areas have been an asset in compiling a “tool kit” for self care that is a pleasure to share. At the very least the meditation (s)/visualization, and the session greatly assist in experiencing a deeper level of relaxation/comfort.
A good deal of my work is with the newly diagnosed in breast cancer and/or living with advanced cancer, (or journey with their family). Anticipatory grief is often part of the journey for those with serious illness diagnosis and remains my privilege to be part of a support system.
My volunteer work includes representing PEI on the board of the Canadian Breast Cancer Network. CBCN is Canada’s ONLY patient-directed National BC health charity and is over 30+ years old. cbcn@cbcn.ca or 1-800-685-8820 for info/ed/support.
As well, I co-facilitate the BC Support group and have been a member since 2003. The PEI BC Information Partnership provide the newly diagnosed with the Sunflower Kit (information/data) thanks to an arrangement through PEI Pathology department at QEH. I represent the BCSG on this committee.
In more recent years it has become clear that the “patient voice” is an important one for those doing research, analysis, supports so invitations abound for such country-wide so I assist in this by sharing information, surveys, etc. The Atlantic Cancer Consortium included a Patient Advisory Committee these last few years with Lead Medical Advisor at Memorial University Dr. Sevtap Savas.
I continue to be available for adults who have experienced early childhood sexual assault/incest whether individually or through a directed therapeutic group.
